Have you ever noticed when you start considering purchasing a certain car, you suddenly see that car everywhere? Why is that car suddenly so popular when a week ago you hardly saw any? The popularity of that car didn’t really change did it? No, you are noticing them more because the research you did on that car has activated your RAS (reticular activating system). This is the portion of your brain that tells you what to focus on, what to notice and pay attention to, and what not to pay attention to.
It is no wonder, that many successful people, athletes and businessmen alike, will tell you that they use some form of visualization. It is not enough to just to set a goal in your head, you need to write it down. You need to see it. You need to visualize yourself meeting that goal. And the most important part…you need to see it DAILY. You need to remind yourself of your goal, why it is that you are getting up and going about your daily business. This daily reminder keeps that goal “top of mind”. It keeps you focused. It keeps you moving forward and reminding you to do something each day to get you closer and closer to that goal.
There are many ways to achieve this daily reminder. Some people imagine it and see it in their mind’s eye for a few minutes before they get going in the morning, others will write a journal and read through it nightly. I like to use my vision board.
